When Allison reached out about her Chicago engagement photos, I knew we were in for something special. She and Noah wanted to capture the essence of their favorite city with iconic Chicago engagement photos, starting at the Art Institute of Chicago and ending with stunning lakefront skyline views. Their session was the perfect blend of classic Chicago architecture, urban energy, and romantic waterfront moments.
We began Allison and Noah’s engagement session at the Art Institute of Chicago, one of the most iconic landmarks in the city. The grand staircase provided a stunning backdrop for their first portraits. The classic architecture and timeless elegance of this location set the tone for the entire session.
Why the Art Institute Works for Engagement Photos:
The light filtering through the columns created beautiful, soft portraits, and Allison and Noah’s natural chemistry made every shot effortless. These are the kinds of timeless images that will look just as beautiful in 50 years as they do today. Learn more about visiting the Art Institute of Chicago and its iconic architecture.

After the Art Institute, we ventured into the heart of downtown Chicago, and the city became our playground. We headed to the iconic Wrigley Building area, where classic Chicago architecture meets the Chicago River, creating the perfect urban backdrop for engagement photos.
The Wrigley Building & Michigan Avenue Bridge:
There’s something magical about photographing couples in an urban environment, and the Wrigley Building is one of Chicago’s most recognizable landmarks. The white terra cotta facade and distinctive clock tower create a stunning backdrop, whether you’re capturing portraits on the street or from across the river.
We captured Allison and Noah crossing the street with the Wrigley Building towering behind them, creating that quintessential Chicago moment. The energy of the city, the movement of traffic, and the classic architecture all came together to tell their urban love story.
The nearby Michigan Avenue Bridge gave us even more variety. The bridge’s architectural details, the river below, and the surrounding skyscrapers created dynamic, layered compositions. These images capture the essence of Chicago: grand, beautiful, and full of life.
Why This Area is Perfect for Chicago Engagement Photos:
Allison and Noah were total naturals, walking through the streets of Chicago. We stopped for portraits with the Wrigley Building framing them perfectly, captured candid moments as they crossed Michigan Avenue, and used the bridge to create depth and dimension in their images. The authentic connection between them against the backdrop of these iconic Chicago landmarks made for truly stunning engagement photos.

Our next stop was the Chicago Riverwalk, one of my favorite locations for engagement sessions. The Riverwalk offers incredible variety: modern architecture, waterfront views, interesting textures, and beautiful bridges. The reflections of the buildings in the water create a dreamy backdrop, especially during golden hour.
Why the Riverwalk is Perfect for Couples:
We captured photos along the water’s edge, playful shots on the bridges, and romantic portraits with the river and skyline behind them. The variety of backdrops within just a few blocks meant we could create completely different looks without traveling far. The Chicago Riverwalk has become one of the city’s most popular destinations for both locals and visitors.

We ended Allison and Noah’s engagement session at the Lake Michigan lakefront with sweeping Chicago skyline views. This is where the magic truly happened. As the sun began to set, the light became soft and golden, painting the sky in beautiful tones and creating the dreamiest backdrop.
Why the Chicago Lakefront is Unbeatable:
We captured romantic portraits with the skyline silhouetted behind them, playful moments of Noah twirling Allison along the shoreline, and intimate embraces as the city lights began to twinkle in the background. The combination of water, sky, and city created images that truly capture the heart of Chicago.

If you’re considering a Chicago engagement session, here are my top tips:
Best Times for Chicago Photos:
How Many Locations?
Location proximity matters! The Art Institute is just blocks from the Wrigley Building and Riverwalk, which made Allison and Noah’s multi-location session efficient and stress-free. When your locations are close together, you can explore more spots without losing precious shooting time to travel.
Talk to your photographer about how many locations you can realistically cover within your booked timeframe.
My recommendations:
If you’re wanting more than 2 locations, I recommend booking a 3-4 hour engagement session. This gives us enough time to explore each spot, try different poses and lighting, and capture both planned portraits and spontaneous candid moments without feeling rushed.
Allison and Noah’s session included five distinct areas (Art Institute, Wrigley Building, Michigan Avenue Bridge, Riverwalk, and lakefront), but they were all within walking distance or a short drive of each other. This strategic planning maximized our shooting time and minimized travel time, allowing us to capture incredible variety while staying relaxed and enjoying the experience.
Pro tip: Choose locations that are geographically clustered. Downtown Chicago is perfect for this because you can hit multiple iconic spots within a few blocks!
Getting Around:
Outfit Tips:
Allison chose a flowing neutral dress that moved beautifully in the lakefront breeze, while Noah complemented her in a classic button-down and dark pants. Their timeless style choices ensured the focus stayed on them and their connection, not trendy outfits that might date the photos.
What You Need to Know:
Always work with a photographer who knows the rules and respects the locations!
Chicago offers everything you could want in an engagement session location:
Iconic Architecture: From classic to modern, the buildings tell a story
Waterfront Beauty: Lake Michigan provides natural, romantic backdrops
Urban Energy: The city’s vibrant atmosphere adds life to images
Variety: Multiple distinct looks within one session
Seasons: Chicago is stunning year-round (yes, even winter!)
Whether you’re Chicago natives like Allison and Noah or traveling to the city for your session, the diversity of locations ensures your photos will be uniquely yours.
Allison and Noah’s Chicago engagement session told the complete story of their relationship and their love for their city. We moved from the classic elegance of the Art Institute to the urban energy of downtown, the romantic waterfront of the Riverwalk, the modern sophistication of the Pendry, and finally to the breathtaking lakefront skyline.
Each location added a different chapter to their story, and together, the images create a comprehensive portrait of who they are as a couple and what Chicago means to them.
